"It's used on cancer patients, heart patients and in the ICU. We are now looking into using aromatherapy in labor and delivery, as well as in the emergency department waiting area."

During aromatherapy treatment, nurses use essential oils to provide relief from anxiety, pain, sleep deprivation, and stress, among other symptoms. A variety of scents are known to cause a soothing effect, such as lavender for calming or peppermint for cooling.

"Aromatherapy is effective in alleviating many discomforts, such as anxiety, as well as minor aches and pains," said Keron Bowen, director of complementary therapies for Banner Estrella, said. "We are using the therapy to support traditional Western medicine. We are seeing very positive results."
