First Solar Manufacturing Company recently announced its plans to build a new technology campus in Mesa. The company will invest about $300 million in the project, which will initially create 600 permanent
Mesa Arizona jobs and another 400 to 500 temporary construction jobs.
First Solar is the largest manufacturer of thin-film solar modules in the world. The publicly-traded company has annual sales of more than $2 billion in 2009, and sales are expected to reach up to $3.9 billion this year alone.
The 135-acre tech campus will be located at the site of the former General Motors testing facility in
Mesa. The site is about 30 minutes from First Solar's corporate headquarters in Tempe, where the company currently employs about 200 people.
"This is thrilling news for Arizona,"
Gov. Jan Brewer said. "First Solar has become a global leader in the renewable energy field, and its commitment to Arizona today further cements this state's reputation as a magnet for solar investment. There's little doubt why Arizona continues to attract premier employers such as First Solar. Our strategic location, skilled workforce, competitive tax policy and strong quality of life make Arizona attractive to companies anxious to grow and invest."
The new tech campus will initially house four manufacturing lines that have the capability to generate more than 250 megawatts of photovoltaic modules each year, a 3-megawatt solar installation on the roof, and a photovoltaic testing facility.
"Arizona's vast solar resource provides an ideal setting for our state-of-the-art production facility, as
well as the solar power plants where our production is deployed," First Solar President Bruce Sohn said. "The Governor's Competitiveness Package, along with tremendous support from local stakeholders, proved
instrumental in our decision and will drive
continued economic growth throughout Arizona."
Aside from the new tech campus in Mesa, First Solar is building two utility-scale photovoltaic projects in Arizona, including a 290-megawatt project for
NRG Energy in Yuma County and a 17-megawatt project for
APS in Gila Bend.
